    Blood collection competency

If an individual collects blood but is not required to perform the patient ID check between component and collection slip i.e. the BMS will perform the necessary checks and issue the blood component, does the person picking up the component still need to be competency assessed?

    Hi

As the individual is responsible for the blood component, whilst it is in their possession, it follows that they require training in the handling and storage of the blood component.

    Thanks Mike,
Handling and storage of blood components is covered in mandatory blood transfusion training so would that be sufficient for staff that are essentially transporting the blood component back to the clinical area? i.e. would they need to be competency assessed in this task in addition to their mandatory training?
    Best wishes

    Hi

If somebody is trained to do a task they may not be competent in it so therefore it follows that staff undertake training with a competency based assessment to ensure that the training has been effective.

    I hope that makes sense
